Its natural to read the account of Herod and recoil at the monstrous acts and extreme paranoia of such a delusional person. So passionate to preserve himself, he himself uncovered truths foretold only in an effort to thwart the inevitable with such extreme measures. My initial reaction is, "whew, i'm not as bad as that guy!"
But as is often the case, we are not all that dissimilar. We've been created with a vacuum that only God can fill. Unfortunately too many times we fill that vacuum with our own pursuits of fulfillment, e.g. wealth, security, our image to others, addictions, etc. While most of us never blatantly seek to rid God from our lives, our efforts to preserve ourselves reveal us to be illegitimate pretenders to the throne. Once we've abandoned God, its not that we will worship nothing, but that we will worship anything.
Worship the King.

Thanks Dan for that insightful reflection. I can't agree more with your statement that "most of us never blatantly seek to rid God from our lives." But we do it nonetheless, perhaps in "subtle" ways. We don't like God to interfere with our lives except when we want something from him ... or if God's will is in line with our will. I suppose it's a question of who's on the throne of our lives. While we give lip service that God is on the throne, if we are honest, God is often left out of the picture as we go about our daily business.
And this all brings us back to our daily quiet times. As long as we are not thinking of God, God is out of the picture. Surely one of the benefits of doing our blog is to encourage godly thinking and to help us to think God's thought throughout the day in the hope that His Words will inform, shape, and direct everything we do. I'm glad for this blog and for everyone who participates in our discussion.

hahahaha Pastor James!!! You always try to remind us about the blog and comments in "subtle" ways. It's so funny.
But yeah, to me it all comes down to one question. Who do I love more? me or Jesus?
this was a great blog today.
whether we are aware of it or not, we are all worshipping something or someone in our lives.
we have unconsciously or not pledged our allegiance, our loyalty, our passions, and our heart to that one "thing" or that one "person".
we can have some idea what that "thing" is by the "fruit" we bear: what most occupies our thoughts, our emotions, how we spend our time and money etc.
but the Lord commands us to "worship the King". this exhortation is not only for His glory; it is for our joy, our life, our eternal salvation.
someone from very long ago said it so well when he said, "those who do not love God above all, love Him not at all".
Worship the King.
